Property and Casualty (P&C) Insurance plays a vital role in helping individuals and businesses manage risk by transferring potential financial losses to insurers. At the heart of this process is the underwriter—a key decision-maker who evaluates risk and crafts insurance solutions that protect what matters most.

As a P&C Underwriting Intern, you will gain hands-on experience in assessing risk, structuring policies, collaborating with internal and external partners, and managing a business portfolio. Opportunity:

We are seeking a motivated and curious individual to join our Boston Commercial Property team as a Summer Intern. This 12-week paid internship offers a deep dive into the world of commercial underwriting. 

You will: 

  • Analyze commercial property exposures and learn how underwriters assess, price, and structure insurance solutions.
  • Gain exposure to a broad range of industries, including real estate, healthcare, education, manufacturing, hospitality, and public entities.
  • Assist with portfolio analysis, underwriting research, and strategic projects that support business decision-making.
  • Collaborate with underwriters, risk engineers, claims professionals, and other business partners.
  • Develop practical experience in commercial insurance, risk management, and financial decision-making.
  • Present findings and recommendations through a capstone project at the conclusion of the internship.
  • Collaborate with BHSI Interns across North America.

You will be part of a dynamic and supportive underwriting team that values collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning. Your work will directly contribute to protecting our clients’ assets and ensuring the profitability of our portfolio. 

What You will Learn: 

  • How commercial insurers evaluate and price risk
  • Fundamentals of catastrophe exposure, including hurricane, earthquake, and flood risk
  • Portfolio management and underwriting strategy
  • Commercial insurance policy structures and coverage concepts
  • How BHSI collaborates with brokers, customers, risk engineers, claims professionals, and other stakeholders

Qualifications: 

  • Interest in Insurance, underwriting, market trends or pursuing a degree in a relevant field (e.g., Business, Finance, Risk Management, Actuarial Science) 
  • Analytical and detail-oriented, with strong problem-solving skills 
  • Proficiency in math and comfortable with statistics, probability and financial principles 
  • Effective communicator and team player 
  • Adaptable, self-motivated, and eager to learn
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel and comfort working with data are preferred.

Pay Transparency:

The base salary range for this position in Boston is from $22/hour - $26/hour; a candidate’s salary is determined by their relevant skills and experience. We value our teammates – both their capabilities and character – as demonstrated by our amazing culture.
