About the Role

Company Description

SOCOTEC is a provider of niche consulting services within the architecture, engineering and construction industries focusing on high-performance buildings and specialty structures. Through an integrated, holistic approach, our professionals provide solutions for building envelope, energy efficiency, sustainability, code advisory, fire/life safety, special inspection and testing projects.

SOCOTEC is proud to announce that it has been officially certified as a Great Place to Work by the renowned global authority on workplace culture, Great Place to Work®.

Job Description

As part of our growth, we are currently looking for a motivated Energy and Sustainability Intern to join our Energy, Sustainability, and Commissioning Services Division, working across both our Energy Modeling and Green Group teams.

The Intern will support Energy Analysts, Sustainability Analysts, and Project Managers, and will be exposed to high-profile green and high-performance building projects – locally, nationally, and internationally – with the opportunity to work alongside major real estate developers, award-winning design firms, and top-tier construction companies. The Intern will be integrated into a team of talented SOCOTEC professionals who have completed over 500 LEED projects worldwide, are at the forefront of energy and materials innovation, and have been actively involved in the U.S. Green Building Council since its inception. Our project types are broad, including offices, multi-family residential (mid & high-rise), assembly, natatoriums, and art galleries, with project sizes typically ranging from 100k to 2 million square feet.

Join a team at the forefront of net-zero design, building decarbonization, and carbon emissions reduction strategies, helping clients create high-performance, sustainable buildings that support long-term environmental goals while advancing the future of the built environment.

This internship is designed for a student or recent graduate looking to gain hands-on, practical exposure to building energy performance, sustainability consulting, and green building certification processes. You will receive training and mentorship from experienced staff while contributing to real client projects, and will be trained on hygrothermal analyses of the building envelope, energy code issues, and sustainability certification schemes.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Help collect and organize building documents (drawings, spec sheets, assembly details) to support project setup
  • Learn the basics of U-value calculations and assist with simple worksheets for common assemblies (walls, roofs, windows) under close supervision
  • Observe and assist with introductory dewpoint analysis exercises as part of training
  • Shadow senior staff on hygrothermal (WUFI) and CFD project files to learn the basics of the software and workflow
  • Support project teams with administrative and research tasks related to building certifications (LEED, WELL, and similar programs)
  • Help identify and summarize sustainable design/construction ideas found during research, for review by senior staff
  • Research energy codes, sustainability concepts, and green building certification programs (LEED, ENERGY STAR, WELL, etc.) and summarize findings
  • Help organize and proofread reports, calculation summaries, and project files
  • Communicate with team members and assist with basic coordination tasks as directed
  • Keep files and trackers organized, and help monitor progress on assigned tasks
  • Occasionally help prepare slides or materials for internal presentations, white papers, or case studies
  • Attend in-house seminars, training sessions, and team meetings to build foundational knowledge

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing, or recently completed, a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Architecture, Engineering (Mechanical, Aerospace, or Civil), Physics, Sustainability, Interior Design, or a related field
  • Eagerness to learn and ability to work well in a team environment
  • Demonstrated interest or passion for green building, energy efficiency, and environmental sustainability
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks while maintaining attention to detail
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel
  • Community or professional organization involvement in sustainability is a plus
  • Basic familiarity with architectural details/drawings is a plus
  • Basic AutoCAD and/or Revit skills are a plus
  • Coursework or exposure to building science, thermodynamics, heat transfer, or sustainability principles is a plus
  • Exposure to THERM, COMcheck, WUFI, CFD, or LEED/WELL documentation tools (e.g., OneClick LCA) is a plus but not required

Please note: This is a technical consulting internship, NOT a design position.
