About the Role

This internship is primarily educational in nature and is designed to provide BYU–Hawaii Facility and Construction Management students with meaningful, hands-on learning experiences within the Meetinghouse Facilities Department (MFD). The internship provides students an opportunity to apply principles and practices learned through their academic studies in a professional facilities management environment.

Under general supervision, the Intern performs assigned work and gains practical exposure to core facilities management functions, including facility operations, facility assessment, capital project management, and long-term asset planning. Through these experiences, Interns develop a broader understanding of how facilities are effectively managed, maintained, and planned throughout their lifecycle.

The internship also supports the development of future facilities management talent and strengthens global partnerships by preparing students to apply their knowledge, skills, and experience in future professional assignments.

Responsibilities

  • Support day-to-day facility operations and maintenance activities under the direction of an assigned Facility Manager or Regional Facility Manager. Participate in facility inspections, assessments, and site visits to gain practical experience evaluating facility conditions and needs. Assist with assigned capital project activities, including planning, coordination, documentation, and project follow-up. Gain exposure to long-term facility and asset planning processes, including lifecycle planning and prioritization of facility needs.

  • Complete assigned facilities management coursework and certification activities, including the IFMA Essentials of Facility Management program.

  • Participate in informational interviews with facilities professionals and other key contacts to develop a broader understanding of roles, processes, and career opportunities.

  • Attend Q&A sessions with subject matter experts to ask questions, share observations, and apply learning to internship experiences.

  • Work closely with the assigned supervisor to plan activities, coordinate site visits, establish learning priorities, and review progress.

  • Maintain appropriate documentation of internship activities, learning experiences, and assigned work.

  • Build professional relationships with local and global facilities management teams and demonstrate effective communication and collaboration.

  • Perform other facilities management and learning-related assignments as directed by the assigned supervisor.

  • The Intern receives assignments from supervising staff. The Manager reviews the Intern's work occasionally. The supervisor reviews each assignment as it is completed. The Intern is expected to meet rigid and challenging deadlines, work in harmony with other people, take direction on each assignment, and give full attention to detail.
