About the Nursing Internship

Take the next step into emergency and referral nursing.

Our Nursing Internship is designed for qualified Veterinary Nurses with general practice experience who are ready to build their skills in a busy emergency and specialist referral hospital. You'll spend approximately 75% of the year in our Emergency & Critical Care (ECC) service, building confidence with emergency presentations, hospitalised patients and increasingly complex cases. The remaining 25% is spent rotating through specialty departments, which may include Internal Medicine, Surgery, Ophthalmology and Cardiology.

You don't need to arrive knowing everything. That's the purpose of the internship!

How the internship works

  • A dedicated nurse mentor for the duration of your internship
  • A structured learning plan with competency sign-offs across ECC skills
  • Weekly/fortnightly specialist-led education and case discussions
  • Formal check-ins at 3, 6 and 9 months to review your progress and goals
  • On successful completion, the opportunity to transition into a permanent role

 What you'll learn

  • Emergency triage, patient assessment and clinical reasoning
  • Nursing hospitalised emergency and critical care patients, and recognising and responding to changes in their condition Emergency stabilisation and management of acute presentations
  • CRIs, blood products, transfusion medicine, advanced analgesia and emergency medications
  • Assisting with CPR, intubation, thoracocentesis and advanced patient monitoring
  • Complex medical, surgical and specialty cases across our referral departments

As your skills develop, you'll gradually take greater ownership of patient care.

Roster: 4 x 10-hour shifts per week on a rotating roster including days, nights, weekends and public holidays. Specialty rotations run on weekday day shifts. Majority of the internship will be out of ARH Homebush, with occasional shifts at ARH Greater Western Sydney if required.

About You

  • Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing (or equivalent) and at least 1 year of experience in general practice
  • A genuine interest in Emergency & Critical Care and referral nursing
  • Curious and motivated, and comfortable asking questions and taking feedback
  • Organised, adaptable and a good communicator in a busy team environment
