As a Phage Laboratory Intern, you'll gain hands-on experience in microbiology, laboratory operations, quality practices, and data management. A key focus of this internship will be a dedicated project aimed at building knowledge around a phage-related challenge impacting customers, providing a valuable opportunity to develop both technical and problem-solving skills.

 

The role & your impact

In this role, you will support the daily operations of the Phage Laboratory while learning laboratory techniques, safety procedures, and quality standards. Working under close supervision, you will contribute to testing activities, laboratory organization, and project work that supports customer-focused solutions.

Your key responsibilities in this role

  • Assist laboratory staff with routine phage testing activities and sample preparation.
  • Follow laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and safety guidelines.
  • Support laboratory organization, cleanliness, and housekeeping activities.
  • Assist with data entry, record keeping, and documentation of laboratory activities.
  • Help manage laboratory inventories, supplies, and materials.
  • Prepare laboratory media, reagents, and materials under supervision.
  • Participate in equipment cleaning, monitoring, and maintenance activities.
  • Attend team meetings, training sessions, and learning opportunities.
  • Apply Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and quality standards in daily work.
  • Support special projects and other duties as assigned.

 

What you’ll need to be successful in this role

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Microbiology, Food Science, Biology, Biotechnology, Dairy Science, or a related scientific field.
  • Strong interest in laboratory work and microbiological testing.
  • Ability to follow instructions, procedures, and laboratory safety requirements.
  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office applications.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Positive attitude and willingness to learn.

 

Additional skills & interests we value

  • Previous laboratory coursework or hands-on laboratory experience.
  • Interest in bacteriophages, microbiology research, or customer-focused scientific solutions.
  • Curiosity and enthusiasm for problem-solving and continuous improvement activities.
  • Experience with scientific documentation or data analysis tools.

Ways of Working / Working Conditions

  • Full-time internship assignment lasting approximately 10 weeks.
  • Located on-site in West Allis, WI.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and work at laboratory benches for extended periods. 
  • Ability to lift and move laboratory materials and supplies up to 25 pounds. 
  • Frequent use of hands for handling laboratory equipment and samples. 
  • Ability to wear required PPE and follow laboratory safety requirements. 
  • Laboratory environment with appropriate safety procedures and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements. 
  • Exposure to laboratory equipment, microbiological samples, and cleaning chemicals under controlled conditions. 
  • Training provided for all required laboratory procedures and safety practices. 

 

Compensation & Benefits

Expected salary: $23/hr
