About The Company
In operation since 1949, Idaho National Laboratory is a science-based, applied engineering national laboratory dedicated to supporting the U.S. Department of Energy's missions in energy research, nuclear science and national defense. The world's first usable amount of electricity from nuclear energy was generated here in 1951. At 890 square miles (569,135 acres), the INL Site is roughly 85 percent the size of Rhode Island. In addition to our geographic resources, the lab hosts a variety of unique facilities, including the Advanced Test Reactor National Scientific User Facility. Complementing our nuclear research, the lab has numerous alternative energy and national security programs. Robotics, wind power, high-performance computing, biofuels, critical infrastructure protection, carbon management and advanced vehicle testing are just a few examples of our multifaceted research capabilities. If you are looking for a 21st-century energy or technology career, visit our Careers tab at www.inl.gov. Battelle Energy Alliance manages INL for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy.
About the Role

Idaho National Laboratory is seeking a motivated intern to support our Systems Engineering team. This internship offers hands‑on experience in System of Systems development, requirements engineering, architecture design, and verification and validation activities that support innovative research and national mission needs. Interns will work alongside experienced engineers to contribute to projects that span clean energy, national security, and advanced research programs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the development of System of Systems architectures, including identifying system interactions, dependencies, and integration points.
  • Assist in requirements elicitation, decomposition, and management, working with multidisciplinary teams to capture functional and performance needs.
  • Participate in architecture modeling and analysis, using established SE tools and frameworks to evaluate system behavior, interfaces, and design alternatives.
  • Support verification and validation (V&V) planning and execution, helping ensure system requirements are testable, traceable, and met by design solutions.
  • Contribute to creation of systems engineering artifacts, such as interface definitions, functional flow diagrams, requirements traceability matrices, and system behavior models.
  • Collaborate with engineers, researchers, and project managers to apply systems thinking to real‑world problems in energy, national security, robotics, and advanced technologies.
  • Participate in team discussions, design reviews, and technical evaluations to gain visibility into the full systems lifecycle.

This team works a 9x80 schedule onsite at our Idaho Falls campus. Start date and duration of internship vary based on project and student's availability.
