Position Summary
The Communications Intern will gain hands-on experience supporting the marketing, branding, and communication efforts of a Life Plan Community. This unpaid internship is designed for undergraduate or graduate students pursuing a degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, Digital Media, Graphic Design, or a related field. The intern will assist with content creation, social media management, photography, videography, graphic design, and internal communications while helping showcase the people, programs, and stories that make Southminster unique.
Through collaboration with residents, team members, and leadership, the intern will develop professional communication skills and gain experience in strategic communications within the senior living and healthcare industry.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Observe and support the Communications Specialist in providing high-quality content for internal and external communications.
Assist with administrative tasks for the Communications department and Leadership Team.
Attend resident and team member activities to capture photos and videos for marketing and communication purposes.
Help evaluate, edit, and organize photos and videos for use in social media, newsletters, and other communication channels.
Assist in creating graphics, flyers, social media content, and promotional materials.
Interact professionally with residents, families, and team members while maintaining resident dignity and confidentiality.
Gain experience managing multiple communication platforms for a professional organization.
Attend meetings, trainings, and educational opportunities to enhance knowledge of communications, aging services, and industry best practices.
Learning Objectives
Through this internship, students will:
Gain practical experience working with older adults in a healthcare and community environment.
Develop an understanding of communications, marketing, and public relations within a Life Plan Community.
Learn how communication strategies are used to engage residents, families, team members, and the broader community.
Learn the logistics of managing internal and external communications for an organization.
Increase knowledge of administrative operations within a Life Plan Community.
Strengthen written communication, content creation, professionalism, and interdisciplinary collaboration skills.
Qualifications
Current enrollment in a Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, Digital Media, Graphic Design, or related degree program.
Interest in working with older adults and understanding the aging process.
Strong written, verbal, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
Experience with social media, photography, videography, graphic design, or other content creation tools preferred.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate professionalism.
Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
Must comply with applicable health screening, background check, and orientation requirements.
Physical Requirements
Ability to move throughout the community and participate in resident activities.
Ability to sit, stand, walk, and communicate effectively for extended periods.
Ability to occasionally lift or carry materials related to programming and events.
