About the Role

Purpose: Assists staff on assigned projects while gaining hands-on industry experience. Interns may be placed in any of NCE’s practice areas (Civil Engineering, Asset Management, Environmental, Landscape Architecture, Pavements & Materials, or Water Resources) based on business need and the intern’s field of study. Under supervision, participates in studies, investigations, field activities, and designs. This position may be based in NCE’s Sacramento, Richmond, Oakland, or Anaheim, California office, or our Reno or So. Lake Tahoe, Nevada office.

Reporting Relationship: Reports directly to the assigned Supervisor or Mentor

Responsibilities:

  • Learns to understand company technical policies and procedures during the execution of projects for clients
  • Under supervision, assists in the execution of design processes on assigned projects and requests assistance from senior technical staff when needed
  • Assists the design team in the coordination of project designs with other disciplines
  • Observes and learns the execution of specific engineering studies and design analyses
  • Accompanies senior technical staff in performing on site inspections during construction and learns how to communicate design requirements with contractors and equipment suppliers
  • Writes field reports, internal correspondence, sections of formal reports
  • May supervise subcontractors and/or company employees
  • Contacts vendors; researches literature and regulatory requirements under supervision
  • Actively participates in professional organizations where the technical reputation and image of the firm may be enhanced
  • Must be able to perform job responsibilities safely

 Qualifications (Must Have):

  • Currently enrolled in a degree program in engineering, environmental science, landscape architecture, geology, or a related field
  • If the job requires solo work assignments outside of the office, a valid driver's license is required
  • If the job requires work on hazardous waste sites then, in accordance with 29 CFR 1910.120 or state equivalent, a physical exam is required to obtain medical clearance
  • Flexibility to work outside normal business hours as required

 Qualifications (Nice to Have):

  • None to two (0 -2) years experience in either related fields of NCE’s practice areas
  • Relevant coursework, academic projects, or prior internship experience
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; familiarity with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or GIS
  • For engineering students, progress toward the Fundamentals of Engineering (F.E.) Exam

 Working Conditions: Office environment; may require some field work

 Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting and working at a computer
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and climb on uneven terrain and active construction sites during field work
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds of equipment, samples, or supplies
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Ability to travel to project sites, which may include extended time in a vehicle

 Compensation: $22.00 – $30.00 per hour, based on location, academic standing, and experience
