Turn Materials Science Into Manufacturing Impact – Intern in Process Engineering at ATI

At ATI, we engineer specialty materials that power the next generation of aircraft, spacecraft, surgical implants, and energy systems. As a Process Engineering Intern, you’ll work alongside Operations and Engineering teams to improve manufacturing processes, strengthen quality consistency, and solve real-world production challenges. You’ll apply your engineering background to projects that deliver measurable impact on the manufacturing floor.

What You’ll Work On

Depending on your project assignment, you may:

  • Partner with the Operations team to create visual standards for quality metrics on the shop floor and refresh operating requirements.
  • Develop a measurement tool for Technology and Maintenance to check VAR furnace tilt and alignment, helping prevent misaligned melting and potential furnace damage.
  • Identify process improvement opportunities during ESR startup to improve consistency and manufacturing performance.
  • Analyze process data to identify trends, opportunities for improvement, and potential sources of variation.
  • Develop or improve standard operating procedures to support consistent execution of manufacturing processes.
  • Partner with Operations and Engineering teams to investigate process issues and develop practical solutions.

What You’ll Gain

  1. Hands-on experience in manufacturing process engineering within ATI’s Monroe VIM and Remelt operations.
  2. Practical experience with data analysis, problem solving, and investigative failure analysis.
  3. Exposure to nickel melting technologies, including VIM, VAR, and ESR processes.
  4. Experience developing standard operating procedures and visual standards that improve quality consistency and execution.
  5. Opportunities to apply materials science principles to real-world manufacturing challenges.
  6. Collaboration with both Operations and Engineering teams on projects designed to deliver measurable impact in a short period of time.
  7. Potential opportunity to transition into a full-time Process Engineer position at ATI after graduation.
Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

  • B.S. or Graduate candidate in:
    • Materials Science & Engineering
    • Mechanical Engineering
    • Metallurgical Engineering
    • Industrial or Manufacturing Engineering
  • GPA of 3.0+ (preferred)
  • Strong interest in thermo-mechanical processing of metals
  • Familiarity with:
    • Excel, Python, or Minitab/JMP for data analysis
    • Stress-strain behavior, microstructure-property relationships, and process modeling
  • Ability to work in plant and shop-floor environments

We thrive when the expectations are great, and the barriers are high. We're solving the world's most difficult challenges through materials science. Our advanced, integrated process technologies and proven performers give us a tremendous competitive advantage.
