About the Role

Job ID: R-125849

Role Summary:

Join Insomniac Games as a Concept Art Intern for Summer 2027 and gain hands-on experience creating artwork that helps shape the characters, environments, and visual direction of AAA video games.

As a Concept Art Intern, you'll be embedded within a development team, working alongside artists and content creators to develop pre-visualization artwork that supports game production. You'll contribute to concept development for characters, creatures, environments, props and other assets while learning how creative ideas move through a AAA video game pipeline.

Throughout the internship, you'll receive one-on-one mentorship from senior members of the X-Dev team and have direct access to our in-house Concept team. You'll strengthen your artistic and technical skills, collaborate with experienced artists, and gain practical experience contributing to game development projects from day one.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Collaborate with our internal Concept Team to create concept artwork that supports game production, including thumbnails and sketches, reference sheets, paint-overs, callout sheets, and production paintings.
  • Develop visual concepts for characters, creatures, environments, props and other assets that help communicate creative ideas and guide production.
  • Apply artistic principles such as design, perspective, composition, color theory, lighting, anatomy, detail distribution, and visual balance to create clear and effective artwork.
  • Translate imaginative ideas into visual explanations that inspire and inform the game development pipeline.
  • Create content that supports artistic direction and helps define “quality targets” for game assets and environments.
  • Collaborate with Art Director(s), artists, and other team members to refine concepts and achieve established visual targets.
  • Apply 2D art skills while exploring opportunities to incorporate 3D techniques into concept development.
  • Participate in development meetings to learn how cross-functional teams collaborate to create and launch AAA games.
  • Work closely with mentor(s) to develop technical skills, artistic sensibilities, and an understanding of professional concept art workflows.
  • Manage assigned projects and deadlines while incorporating feedback and learning new techniques throughout the production process.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in a related field at an accredited university.
  • Strong 2D artistic skills and an understanding of foundational art principles.
  • Ability to apply design, perspective, composition, color theory, lighting, anatomy, detail distribution, and visual balance to concept artwork.
  • Creative problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate ideas into visual concepts that support game development.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with a willingness to receive direction, incorporate feedback, and work closely with a team.
  • A self-motivated, creative, and responsible approach to learning and completing assigned work.
  • Ability to manage tasks and meet deadlines in a collaborative production environment.
  • Passion for video games and art, with an interest in learning how concept art contributes to AAA game development.
