About The Company
In operation since 1949, Idaho National Laboratory is a science-based, applied engineering national laboratory dedicated to supporting the U.S. Department of Energy's missions in energy research, nuclear science and national defense. The world's first usable amount of electricity from nuclear energy was generated here in 1951. At 890 square miles (569,135 acres), the INL Site is roughly 85 percent the size of Rhode Island. In addition to our geographic resources, the lab hosts a variety of unique facilities, including the Advanced Test Reactor National Scientific User Facility. Complementing our nuclear research, the lab has numerous alternative energy and national security programs. Robotics, wind power, high-performance computing, biofuels, critical infrastructure protection, carbon management and advanced vehicle testing are just a few examples of our multifaceted research capabilities. If you are looking for a 21st-century energy or technology career, visit our Careers tab at www.inl.gov. Battelle Energy Alliance manages INL for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy.
About the Role

Idaho National Laboratory's Cooperative Education Program (CO-OP) offers students an extended, hands-on opportunity to apply what they're learning in the classroom alongside nationally recognized scientists and engineers. Unlike a traditional internship, a CO-OP is a longer-term commitment, students typically work with INL for two or more terms (Fall, Spring, or Summer), and these terms do not need to be consecutive.

The Project:

The Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) is the prime testing center in the United States for advanced technologies associated with nuclear energy power systems. This complex is the nexus of research on new reactor fuels and related materials. MFC contributes significantly to the development of increasingly efficient fuels and the important work of nonproliferation. As a CO-OP student at MFC, you will join our dynamic team whose mission is to provide engineering support to the nuclear fuels and materials research facilities. This team works a 4x10 schedule and works onsite at the Materials and Fuels Complex near Idaho Falls, Idaho.

Typical Responsibilities Include:

  • Define requirements and develop design concepts
  • Complete and document detailed design
  • Develop engineering documents such as drawings, specifications, and calculations to support work assignments
