About The Company
For more than 55 years, WD has built the storage infrastructure that powers the world’s data. Now, as WD, we’re driving certainty for the AI-driven data economy—delivering the scale, reliability, and economics required to turn data into intelligence.
About the Role

Company Description

WD is building the infrastructure behind the AI-driven data economy.

As AI scales, so does data. Every interaction, every model, every system generates data that must be stored, managed, and made accessible over time. That’s where we come in.

We combine deep engineering expertise with global-scale manufacturing to deliver the storage systems that make AI possible, powering hyperscale data centers, cloud platforms, and enterprise infrastructure worldwide.

This isn’t theoretical work. It’s real systems, at real scale, people solving some of the hardest challenges in technology today.

We’re looking for people who want to build, solve, and operate at that level.

Join us and let’s shape the future of data.

Job Description

We are looking for a Data Engineering Intern to support our engineering operations team. This role covers applied work across schema design, data ingestion, API interfaces, template generation logic, and reporting dashboards — with exposure to multiple data types including relational, time-series, and vector/knowledge data.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in database schema design and documentation for an automation system supporting engineering test operations.
  • Develop and maintain ETL pipelines for data ingestion and transformation workflows.
  • Build basic API interfaces for data access and integration with engineering platforms and systems
  • Implement template parameter mapping and generation logic using templating frameworks.
  • Support reporting and dashboarding development for engineering and operational metrics.
  • Perform data quality checks and validation across structured and unstructured data sources.
  • Maintain clear documentation for pipelines, schemas, and workflows.
  • Participate in code reviews and maintain clean, well-documented code.

This position is part of our Early Career program at WD. Our Early Career program is designed to support individuals beginning their professional career by providing the foundational training through a structured onboarding, mentorship, and development curriculum.

Qualifications

REQUIRED

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Engineering, Data Science, or a related field.
  • Expected internship onboarding/start date: Early 2027.

SKILLS

  • Solid foundation in SQL and relational database concepts.
  • Experience with Python for data handling and transformation (pandas / polars a plus).
  • Familiarity with REST API concepts — consuming endpoints and mapping data.
  • Basic understanding of ETL pipeline design and data ingestion workflows.
  • Experience with templating frameworks or code generation tools.
  • Ability to research and solve technical problems independently.
  • Comfortable working in a command-line environment, including remote access via SSH.
  • Version control using Git.

NICE TO HAVE

  • Dashboarding tools (e.g., Grafana, Power BI, or similar).
  • Exposure with modern API integration frameworks and data orchestration tools
  • Time-series databases or specialized data systems
  • Systems programming language exposure
