About The Company
The ACLU is an non-profit, non-partisan organization of people who believe in the power of action. We are united by the quest – “We the people dare to create a more perfect union.” Whether in the courts, statehouses, Congress or communities, we fight to defend the rights that the Constitution guarantees to all of us —regardless of who we are, where we come from, whom we love, or what we believe. Together, we take up the toughest civil rights and liberties challenges of our time. We seek to inspire those who want change to become the ones who make change.
About the Role

The ACLU seeks an Undergraduate Intern in the Product & Technology Department of the ACLU’s National office in New York City. This internship can be remote or hybrid and can be full-time or part-time.

Qualifying applicants must currently be matriculated undergraduate students and must be based in the U.S. for the entire duration of the internship.

The Team:

The ACLU's Product & Technology team partners with departments across the ACLU to build and maintain innovative, robust and secure digital products and technical systems that accelerate the ACLU's mission as our nationwide guardian of rights and liberties. We are a team of engineers, designers, product managers and administrators who take pride in creating technical solutions that help raise money, get our message out in the world, mobilize our supporters, and manage our data with integrity.

This product specialist internship will be an opportunity to contribute to the web and mobile experiences that drive audience engagement, action, and giving. Product specialist interns will work with a cross-functional group of product managers, engineers, and designers to understand stakeholder and user needs and deliver compelling digital experiences that help the broader public understand and engage in the work the ACLU is doing.

What You’ll Do:

As a product specialist Intern, you will become an expert in our nationwide websites and content management system and use that knowledge to help the people who publish on them succeed. You will create support materials for internal users, conduct microsite reviews to ensure sites meet quality and best-practice standards, and help draft clear messaging that keeps stakeholders informed about web updates. You will also build decks, documents, and other resources for product users, and share user feedback with the Product team to inform future improvements. This role offers hands-on experience in a product specialist career path, with guidance from experienced product managers.

  • Draft stakeholder messaging, including release notes, feature announcements, and web updates, for review by the Product team
  • Create decks, documents, training materials, and product walkthroughs for product users and internal teams
  • Gather questions and feedback from users and summarize recurring themes for the Product team

What You’ll Bring:

  • Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to explain technical topics in clear, plain language for different audiences
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills for managing multiple deliverables and tracking issues
  • Comfort learning new software and digital tools quickly
  • Experience creating documents, presentations, or other materials in tools like Google Workspace or Microsoft Office

Why the ACLU:

For over 100 years, the ACLU has worked to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed by the Constitution and laws of the United States. Whether it’s ending mass incarceration, achieving full equality for the LGBTQ+ community, establishing new privacy protections for our digital age, or preserving the right to vote or the right to have an abortion, the ACLU takes up the toughest civil liberties cases and issues to defend all people.

Our Commitment to Accessibility, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
Accessibility, equity, diversity, and inclusion are core values of the ACLU and central to our work to advance liberty, equality, and justice for all. We are a community committed to learning and growth, humility and grace, transparency, and accountability. We believe in a collective responsibility to create a culture of belonging for all people within our organization – one that respects and embraces difference; treats everyone equitably; and empowers our colleagues to do the best work possible. We are as committed to anti-oppression and anti-racism internally as we are externally. Because whether we’re in the courts or in the office, we believe ‘We the People’ means all of us.
