Axoft is building the most advanced and scalable platform for implantable brain-machine interfaces. Our mission is to enable minimally invasive, long-term stable and ultra-high bandwidth communication with the brain, opening new therapies and treatments against neurological disorders and physical disabilities. We have bridged the gap between electronic and biological materials to create the softest, nanofabricated brain implants in the world. We are now looking to add talented people to the team who are passionate, deliver results, and are committed to finding creative solutions to complex problems. Axoft is looking for candidates who have demonstrated exceptional abilities and results in their previous professional, academic and interpersonal experiences and possess the skills and experience relevant to this role.
About the Role:
We are looking for an undergraduate Engineering Intern to support the assembly and preparation of medical devices for ****verification and validation (V&V) activities. In this hands-on role, you will work closely with engineers and other technical team members to assemble prototype and test devices, follow detailed work instructions and procedures, document your work, and help ensure that test articles are consistently built and ready for evaluation. This is a great opportunity for a student who enjoys working with their hands, has strong attention to detail, and wants to learn how cutting-edge electromechanical engineering, manufacturing, quality, and regulatory requirements come together in the development of medical devices.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
Research and Development:
Assemble medical-device components, subassemblies, and test articles using engineering drawings, work instructions, and assembly procedures
Operations may include fastening, fixturing, alignment, bonding, connector assembly, and other precision assembly tasks associated with neural devices.
Inspect components and assemblies using basic measurement and inspection equipment such as calipers, microscopes, gauges, and other laboratory tools.
Inspect incoming components and completed assemblies against defined requirements before use in testing, and document the results. Maintain clear and accurate records of assembly activities, measurements, observations, and test-article identification, and report deviations according to established procedures.
Follow controlled procedures and documentation practices appropriate for a regulated medical-device environment. Maintain traceability of components and test articles and ensure the correct drawing, procedure, and device configuration are used for each build.
Record build information and test-article identifiers in spreadsheets or electronic databases.
Use 3D printers (FDM and SLA), laser cutting, CNC machining, and other prototyping methods to support engineers in preparing test articles, fixtures, tooling, and materials for V&V activities.
Identify assembly issues, defects, or unexpected behavior and communicate them clearly to the engineering team.
Help maintain organized workspaces, tools, materials, and inventory needed for ongoing testing activities.
Support continuous improvement of assembly processes by identifying opportunities to make builds more repeatable, efficient, and robust.
Work collaboratively with Engineering, Quality, Pre-Clinical, and other cross-functional teams as needed.
Essential Skills and Qualifications:
Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field.
Strong mechanical aptitude and comfort working with small and fragile components, and hand tools.
Prior exposure to maker-space, laboratory, manufacturing or project-based environments.
Strong attention to detail and ability to follow written procedures accurately.
Familiarity with common laboratory and prototyping tools, with hands-on experience in at least some areas such as 3D printing, laser cutting, machining, soldering, or basic electrical test equipment.
Experience reading mechanical drawings, engineering drawings, or assembly instructions.
Ability to perform precision-oriented work while maintaining consistent quality and repeatability.
Ability to communicate clearly and work effectively in a collaborative engineering environment.
Good organizational and documentation skills.
Desired Skills and Qualifications:
Available for a 6-month internship.
Experience assembling and troubleshooting simple electromechanical systems
Experience using precision tools such as torque drivers, tweezers, cutters, microscopes, or inspection equipment.
Knowledge of design for manufacturing (DFM) principles.
Hands-on experience with electronics prototyping platforms such as Arduino, Raspberry Pi, or similar systems.
Experience with CAD tools such as Onshape, SolidWorks, Creo, or similar.
Exposure to medical devices, biotech, semiconductor fabrication, cleanroom environments, or other highly controlled laboratory/manufacturing environments.
Previous experience working under formal procedures or quality-controlled processes.
