Scope of Position

This project will explore unconventional processing methods to access novel glass compositions. Using IOM’s small-sample levitator coupled with a CO2 laser, glasses will be melted at ultra-high temperatures and rapidly quenched, enabling compositions that are difficult or impossible to produce by conventional methods. Recently established optical characterization methods will be used to identify promising candidates. A hot press process will then be used to produce bulk glass parts suitable for standard property characterization. The project will deliver both new glass compositions relevant to AR applications and a new workflow for discovering novel oxide glasses.
